Meet the Maker: Emma from Ladybird Flowers

28 Jul 2014

My name is Emma and I am in love with flowers. I’m originally from the North of England, and was raised, along with my brother and sister, by my wonderful Mam in a little town near County Durham.I first ventured South in 2008, when a career in Finance took me to London. I moved to Folkestone (as I had always wanted to live by the sea) and commuted to the City every day. En route I passed beautiful fields and hedgerows, often filled with wild flowers. Watching the changing seasons was the favourite part of my journey and the kernel of an idea began to form in my mind…

As the years went by I moved into central London, first to Notting Hill, then Alexandra Palace, then Maida Vale and then finally back to Notting Hill, where I live now. Over this time my creative nature grew stronger and stronger and my passion for flowers, in all their forms, was rediscovered. After volunteering in an amazing local florist, Phillo Flowers and completing an intense course with the wonderful Tallulah Rose Flower School I created Ladybird.

My day starts with a 5am trip to the fabulous New Covent Garden flower market, where I collect all the beautiful flowers for my orders, which range from hand ties, to arrangements for corporate events and, of course, to weddings. I also work on styled shoots where I get the opportunity to get my creative juices flowing, working in areas such as a very dramatic blustery Brighton beach to the fabulous Cotswolds. My current workshop is my balcony and kitchen and this is where I bring all my ideas to life and where all the flower creations happen.

Just two months ago I was introduced to Appear Here - it was perfect timing for Ladybird to venture into the next stage with a pop up shop. The guys were so helpful, talking me through the best areas for my business and where Ladybird would excel the most. After deciding on the Old Street Station venue I began to work on the design. I’m thrilled with the results and hope you’ll like it too!
If you pop over to Old Street Station you will find fabulous flower boxes, which are perfect for transporting home, cutting-edge real artichoke vases, and über cool succulent Terrariums.

My Northern roots are still very strong - I’m very down to earth and talkative so I’d love you to pop in and say hello and to let me know what you think. I’ll be in Unit 2B from the 4th to the 10th August!
