East Harlem, or unofficially Spanish Harlem, is a vibrant area with a true sense of community. Located on E 121st St, this pop up gallery space for rent just off of 3rd Ave is housed in a non-profit space for local artists to showcase their work.
Most people in East Harlem have long-rooted history in the neighborhood, and when you walk into the bars and restaurants you really feel like everyone knows everyone’s name. Today there’s a strong Puerto Rican, Cuban, and Caribbean population, but places like Patsy’s Pizzeria and Rao’s (good luck ever getting a table there!) show some of the Italian roots. The area is finally seeing some tourism and gentrification, albeit slowly. This pop up is only a few minutes from the 4 and 6 trains, as well as the Metro North.
Your neighbors are mostly residential buildings, but around the corner on 3rd Ave you have a few markets, fast food restaurants, retail shops and a Goodwill. Andy’s diner is a couple blocks north, and Marcus Garvey Park is a few blocks west. Well known spots like Amy Ruth’s and Red Rooster are a little farther afield, and Central Park isn’t too far either.
The space is a bit off the beaten path, so you’ll need to advertise well to get a new crowd, but because it’s already a gallery, the locals know it.
