Lying in the shadow of the Shard is Bermondsey Street – a lively stretch of eateries, bars and galleries. With its village-like atmosphere, it seems a world away from the chaos of Tooley Street. Featuring floor-to-ceiling wraparound windows and fresh white walls, this former gallery-turned-retail space for rent has been newly white-boxed for you to make your mark in a cool, creative neighbourhood.
Tourists, fashionistas and art lovers come to visit the White Cube gallery (opposite) and the Fashion and Textile Museum up the road. Weekday lunchtimes and evenings see the street’s raved-about restaurants and laid-back bars fill up with workers from the area’s many creative businesses. But it’s Bermondsey’s weekend street markets that really draw Londoners and visitors to this little pocket of town.
Next door is the provocatively named (and very popular) F*ckoffee café. A few doors down are ex-Burberry designer Michael McGrath’s lifestyle boutique Bermondsey 167, and the NYC-styled brasserie Village East, which is incidentally one of the reasons why Bermondsey Street got its foodie reputation in the first place.
The shop is set back from the pavement and people have a tendency to park their bikes outside. Consider an eye-catching window display and a little extra signage.
