Where history, food and high fashion meet

No other Parisian neighbourhood pulls you back through time like the district surrounding the Louvre and Rivoli. Wandering the streets of Paris’s 1st arrondissement is to peel back centuries of history. On one side the 18th century Place Vendôme, where some of the world’s finest jewellery brands now have boutiques. And on the other, the site of the original Les Halles food market, now a centre full of shops and restaurants.

And of course, this central district is home to the world’s most famous museum, the Louvre; a beacon of art and culture in the city. The Ministry of Culture can also be found nearby, as well as rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré – home to the world’s biggest fashion houses.

It’s no coincidence then that this stylish district plays host to Paris Fashion Week every year, and houses Colette – a department store which epitomises French style. However, it’s not all about fashion here. Bordered by the Rue des Petits-Champs, the area has a lot to offer food fans, with its wide choice of sophisticated restaurants.

It's a beautiful place for a walk – the stone arcades seem to extend forever.

There are too many shops on Rue de Rivoli to count, but my favourites are Zara and Mango.

I like the side streets, that's where you find all the best independent shops.
